Letting Codex Into the Vault
I started using Codex to allow ChatGPT to access the files directly, because I could easily foresee me having to work very hard to ensure the transfer between AI and the Note Vault was progressing. It only took half an hour or two before I realized that having me in the mix, just made things progress even slower. So I removed myself somewhat. "You have full authority to edit files; just get the migration done and record questions when something is amiss.", is basically how I gave ChatGPT access to edit the entire project via Codex. And gave it access to a local LLM (via Ollama) to use for whatever it can in order to save even more tokens in the cloud: and it is using it!
I have backups and Codex will also trigger a backup if it feels like it might be needed; which is apparently every 5 minutes or so?
Forty-Eight Hours of Migration
Over the past approx 48 hours, Codex have worked through 357 out of 655 notes and marked them as migrated in the old note structure. It has condensed them down into 302 notes under the new structure; and probably filled them with hundreds of questions. But this process is much faster than if it had to wait every time it encountered issues it needed answers from me. While some may be larger structural issues which could benefit from my answers at those early stages, it would just make things work so much slower. The first 24 hours consisted of it waiting for me about 50+% of that time. That was when I gave it free reign to just rewrite whatever it can and insert questions. Also about the same time I decided to pay for the next Pro package, even though that is 5 times more expensive. But the "free use; under fair use doctrine" is just needed, so it doesn't stop within every 5 hours if it ran out of tokens, waiting around needlessly.
I need the AI help, so paying for it to fasttrack this was just the right choice. Also they upgraded the AI to 5.6 just immediately before I upgraded! Chose SOL-version to handle the project. I hope it does the work well!
The Tradeoff
I know I have to probably fix some structural issues afterwards, because AI can make decisions that might not be optimal for the project, but this will still shave off weeks worth of the work, compared to if I'd done it the "old" way.
Meanwhile, in the Garden
But just because I let AI do most of the work 24/7, doesn't mean I'm just sitting around and gaming (all the time). I've been putting my new garden tools to work, getting my hedges (and other areas) trimmed, fixing the lawnmower and getting the lawn mowed and using my new blower to blow areas clean, so the broom can stay in the shed. Even bought extra batteries for the tools! Oh, I have been on summer vacation for the past two weeks; which is why I've been getting so much done on the project. Don't remember if I mentioned that.
Yard-work still takes a lot of hours out of my vacation, even though the ground size is only 814 m2 (8,762 ft2); only about half is the lawn.
AI cleans up the project, I clean up the garden!
